Dejlig badestrand i lønstrup

There are three beaches near Lønstrup. On the beach at Lønstrup itself there are many guests in the summer. It's forbidden to drive your car onto the beach. South of the breakwaters there's plenty of space for those who want some privacy. The beach at Skallerup Klit also offers good bathing conditions. At the beach at Nørlev you can take your car with you.

There are three Blue Flag beaches near Lønstrup: Lønstrup Strand, Skallerup Strand and Nørlev Strand.

The beach at Lønstrup itself is off-limits to cars. The relatively narrow beach has good shelter at the foot of the cliff. Small lagoons with relatively calm water are created between the breakwaters.

At the foot of the cliff there are small dunes where you can soak up the sun after a bracing dip in the sea.

North of the mooring site there's a large area of beach where a few white beach huts and often a couple of small fishing vessels help to create a fine setting.

South of the mooring site there's a roughly 500-metre stretch of beach running along the breakwaters. On a warm summer day this area is packed with bathers, but there are no cars to disturb visitors.

Collapsed sand and clay

South of the breakwaters there's plenty of space for those looking for privacy. You can take a walk along the beach past the church of Mårup Kirke - on the cliff you can see the stones that have fallen down from the churchyard embankment.

Further to the south, the height of the cliff increases, and there can be large deposits of sand and clay here.

After walking about a kilometre you can see Rubjerg Knude lighthouse sticking up out of the sand on the top of the almost 100-metre high cliff. It will often not be possible to make your way around this obstruction, but if there's an offshore breeze and low tide, you might be fortunate enough to make your way past and head on to Nr. Lyngby beach.

Good bathing conditions

The beach at Skallerup Klit is adjacent to a row of breakwaters at the holiday centre. Bathing conditions are good, and you mustn't be put off by the occasionally dark sand. This is simply due to deposits of minerals in the sea on this stretch of coast.

Nørlev Strand is wide and offers fine, large dunes. At Nørlev you may take the car with you onto the beach.

The first bathing guests

The first bathing guests arrived in Lønstrup at the end of the 19th century, whereby the local fisherman looked on in disbelief at the "mad city dwellers" who went for a bracing dip in the North Sea.

In 1913 a journalist describes Lønstrup "as probably the finest bathing venue on the stretch of coastline from Fanø to Skagen. Between 600 and 800 bathers turn up here every year. Whether this is because of the peculiar clay cliffs that in changing weather conditions take on a very different character and occasionally give the coastline a wild and alien appearance, or it's the small, friendly, smiling town that lies idyllically hidden behind the dunes, is difficult to say. Both reasons perhaps. The area certainly offers a greater variety of nature than most other bathing sites."

Coastal erosion

The coast north and south of Lønstrup is eroded by the sea. During a storm, large quantities of sand are washed away and carried north by the current.

At Lønstrup itself and at Skallerup Klit Feriecenter there's coastal protection, but both north and south of these areas, the coast moves one or two metres further east every year.

Clean beaches all year round

Blue Flag beaches are kept clean of waste, and there are facilities such as toilets, emergency telephone and life-saving equipment.

In Lønstrup and the rest of the Toppen af Danmark region, an extra effort is made to keep the beaches clean - at all times of the year. Here the beaches are also cleaned in autumn, winter and spring so that they remain inviting even outside the bathing season.
