The Post Mill Østerklit - Tversted

Denmark's last working roof mill - Østerklit - lies in the dunes at Tannisbugt. A roof mill is a mill that's driven by wind power. Sails are attached to the four blades in order to catch the wind. Every Wednesday during the high season the mill is in operation, and you can hear about the mill and what life was like as a coastal farmer.

Østerklit
Lying amongst the heather and the wild rye in the dunes at Tannisbugt is Denmark's last working roof mill – Østerklit.

Østerklit tells the story of life in the previous century, when the lives of the local people were closely bound to Mother Nature.

Built in 1677
In order to keep a lookout for shipwrecks along the coast in the north-eastern part of Tversted Parish, Asdal manor house built a house called Stenhuset in the area at Østerklit in 1677.

In 1810 the farmhouse at Østerklit was renovated, and in 1872 a separate barn was built opposite the farmhouse. The yard thus adopted a parallel layout. Until the barn was built, there had been a stable at one end of the farmhouse, which was very common on farms at that time.

In 1891 a wing perpendicular to the barn was built to provide space for more animals. However, this wing was demolished again when the state bought the farm in 1938. The farm was rented out as a summer cottage until 1981.

On 7 March 1981 a pyromaniac set light to the farmhouse at Østerklit. The building was razed to the ground and therefore today only the barn remains.

Roof mill was erected in 1912

A roof mill was erected on the roof of the barn in 1912. The mill originated from a farm 7 km south of Østerklit, where it had previously been used.

A rooft mill is a mill that's driven by wind power. Sails are attached to the four blades in order to catch the wind. The mill is called a post mill because the windmill blades are supported by a large piece of timber, called a post.

When the wind drives the blades round, gear wheels and shafts begin to rotate. In this way, wind power is transferred to grinding mills, chaffing and thrashing machines.
